Death Cab for Cutie's single take

Remember how we mentioned that Death Cab for Cutie were making a live, scripted video for "You Are a Tourist?" Well, in case you didn't view it live, you can check it out above. It's certainly an impressive feat--so much so that it's hard to tell this apart from a non-live, scripted video! Though maybe Gibbard's slightly off lip-sync is the giveaway.

The Mynabirds sing in the "LA Rain"

There may not be too much impressive about the video for "LA Rain" from The Mynabirds, it's basically looks like capturing the band through an entire night of performance--they even refer to it as a "mini-documentary" instead of a video. However, what can't be denied is the sultry, soulful vocals of this band! Check out "La Rain" above.

Album Review: Xylos - Xylos

XYLOS
XYLOS

(1000x Records)
www.xylosmusic.net

There are only a handful of records these days that can strattle the thin line between being an interesting indie band and having mainstream potential. Far too often a band will fall on one side or the other. Either an indie band strives for a mainstream sound while ending up boring, or they just are a little too weird for the average listener. With their self-titled debut, Xylos walk this fine line with amazing success.

The band's sound is similar to Chairlift, another act that walked that fine line--and went from indie to major in a single album, with dreamy indie pop sounds mixed with soothing female vocals. "Darling Dearest" kicks off the record with a quiet guitar and peppy tempo, practically begging for the listener to dive in deeper.

Any of these songs could be a single, and if there's any justice in this world, this album will be a huge hit. Here's hoping these release draws the attention of the masses.

Girls Names take a try at lo-fi

The new video for "Bury Me" from Girls Names has a rather lo-fi feeling. It's almost as if it was made with a VHS player, except that the colors seem bolder and more vibrant (when they are there). It's a pretty interesting look. Check it out above. The band's album Dead to Me comes out at the end of the month.

New releases for the week of April 5, 2011

Though there has been no shortage of great release weeks this year, April and May have really got a great batch of albums coming up and this first week of that period kicks it off right. Xylos (pictured), who will also be our special guest this week on Wednesday at 9PM on WHFR, put out a self-titled record that really blows us away. The only thing is that it isn't the only one. Project Jenny/Project Jan return with sophomore album Home Sweet Home, which is also pretty amazing. Daft Punk hear their Tron soundtrack get remixed, the Stephen Colbert-approved Movits! can't get Out of My Head, and The Kills raise Blood Pressures. If that's not enough for you, check out the more complete list of new releases below.
