New releases for the week of March 8, 2011

With the month of March now upon us fully, it is SXSW time. This is sure to mean a lot of big releases from some up-and-coming indie bands (and major label ones with "indie cred"). Hot on our radar now is the iTunes EP from Ravens and Chimes (who graced our bi-weekly radio show at WHFR to share some of these songs with us) and the latest full length from Parts and Labor, Constant Future (pictured). Strfkr is also a welcome return with a new name (again). Old school acts like Rival Schools and R.E.M. (both with that "indie cred" thing I mentioned) also put out new ones this week.

Avril Lavigne feels like a WTF outlier on this list, but there's no keeping a good pop princess down. The rest of this week's new music is below, and don't forget to take a peak into the future of new music in our upcoming releases section.

Airborne Toxic Event are "Chaning"

The Airborne Toxic Event's new video for "Changing" doesn't really come as much of a shock. The band are basically rocking out a sepia-tone party (probably in Los Angeles). It comes across as cool and chic, which is probably exactly what they were going for.

This is Damon and Naomi's video?

Having a still image for the entirety of Damon and Naomi's four and a half minute song, "And You Are There," doesn't feel much like a video, but it still feels strangely appropriate for the slow dreaminess of the ex-Galaxie 500 members. Check out the song and still image above.

Album Review: Parts and Labor - Constant Future

PARTS AND LABOR
CONSTANT FUTURE

(Jagjaguwar)
www.partsandlabor.net

If you listen to the catalog of Brooklyn's Parts and Labor, there's a certain progression that happens. The band add vocals and become more accessible. The band tame down their sound and become less noisy and less abrasive. However, throughout it all they still end up sounding cohesive. Their latest, Constant Future, comes out this Tuesday and continues the pattern that they have developed.

The question, of course, is can they take this too far? At what point is their noisy history completely abandoned in favor of a more pop sound? Vocally, the band have never been better, though they're still far from being "good" singers in a traditional sense. The noisiest elements of Parts and labor seem to take a back seat here as they continue to forge their new sound. It's not completely absent; it just doesn't feel front-and-center. It would be nice to hear some more abrasive elements on this record, or at least have them a little louder in the mix.

The new record might not be the band at their best, but it's still pretty damn great. If Parts and Labor never had to deal with their amazing back catalog, this would be fantastic in isolation. However, they will always be an act that have a lot of expectations to live up to, and even coming close to meeting them is a feat.

The Concretes reveal a "Crack in the Paint"

There's a strange aesthetic to "Crack in the Paint," the latest video from The Concretes. It's blurry and dark, strangely reminiscent of an old film--capturing that vintage feeling perfectly, I might add. But what it may fit even better with is the haunting music of the Swedish band. You can check it out above, and the remaining tour dates after the jump.
