Album Review: Back to the Future the Ride - Tron Legacy

BACK TO THE FUTURE THE RIDE
TRON LEGACY

(Deathbomb Arc)
www.deathbombarc.com/TronLegacy

Figuring out what would be classified as noise music is hard. Every time I ask an artist that might fit into the genre for a definition, they usually respond with the answer, "What I do isn't noise," but then acknowledging their love of the genre. That being said, Tron Legacy isn't a noise record, but the group's sole member, Brian Miller, is certainly one of it's biggest cheerleaders.

So why bring up noise if this isn't a noise record? Noise acts have amplified the construction and destruction run through distortion pedals; they smear their faces on glass with contact mics. It may not be aesthetically pleasing or even complex; anyone could often pull off these types of acts, but few actually think to do so. It's the same reason that made some early avant-garde and modern artists stand out while others have faded to time. If compared to the visual arts world, Back to the Future the Ride is Piet Mondrian.

Tron Legacy has a simple brilliance to it. It has a beautiful and mostly ambient feel to it, but there are moments of contrast. For instance, "Surface to Air Hieroglyph" sounds like a vacuum cleaner at first. It's a little jarring at first, but even that noisy element soon falls into a repetitive and hypnotic pattern. There's nothing that feels all too complex here--mostly rolling, drawn out, synthetic sounds that seem to slowly roll by--but there was nothing complicated about Mondrian either. The simplicity is what made his paintings beautiful, and the same thing can be said about Back to the Future the Ride's song construction. They are beautiful in their basic simplicity; you just didn't think of it first.

Pretty Lights are climbing the walls on new video

Pretty Lights have really made a great video for "Future Blind." The song has the band climbing the colorful walls, and it's one of the best we've seen in a while. We haven't seen this kind of cool thing since Jamiroquai's "Virtual Insanity," except Pretty Lights are far more indie-minded.

New releases for the week of December 7, 2010

If you thought Thanksgiving provided a good reason for great new releases, you haven't seen anything yet. The first full week of December is giving us a load of not only some fantastic records from major labels, but it's also delivering a nice array of indie albums--not to mention a few off the wall abnormalities. The pack of artists is led by T.I., who releases the eagerly awaited No Mercy (pictured to the left). The only way this Atlanta rapper's new album will surprise us is if it manages to NOT jump to the top of the charts. Also on the majors, almost American Idol Adam Lambert has an acoustic album out, Duffy tries to gain traction with her sophomore release, and Daft Punk delivers a rather disappointing soundtrack to the new Tron Legacy film.

The indie side of things is pretty cool this week as well. Diane Birch and The Phenomenal Handclap Band have worked on a collaborative release for S-Curve Records, Dntel has got a double batch of After Parties for Sub Pop, and the synth-driven Freezepop have got a new one as well.

However, it's the weird records where things really get interesting this week. Jimmy McMillan (you know, this guy) physically releases his album that was out a few weeks ago digitally. It's the same situation with the compilation album from Einstürzende Neubauten (pictured to the right), who could also claim to hold the "weird" title--although for entirely different reasons. And let's not forget Back to the Future the Ride with an EP of material named, of all things, Tron Legacy.

And don't forget that you can check out a list of upcoming releases long into the future in our upcoming releases section.

Jamie Foxx to have the Best Night of His Life

We can't blame Jamie Foxx for waiting two years to release a new album. 2008's Intuition was great, and it bodes well for the soon to be released Best Night of My Life (check out the artwork on your right). Foxx's new record will be out on December 21 with the lead-in single, "Fall For Your Type," out now. The collaborations on this album are quite amazing. Drake guests on the aforementioned single, Justin Timberlake and T.I. join forces again on a track entitled "Winner," Rick Ross lends himself to "Living Better Now," and that's really just a small taste of what's going on. A full track list (with the featured guests) is all posted after the fold.

Best Night of My Life track list:
01 This Will Be (Intro)
02 Best Night Of My Life (featuring Wiz Khalifa)
03 Living Better Now (featuring Rick Ross)
04 Winner (featuring Justin Timberlake & T.I.)
05 Freak (featuring Rico Love)
06 Hit It Like This
07 Yep Dat’s Me (featuring Ludacris & Soulja Boy)
08 Fall For Your Type (featuring Drake)

Natalia Kills looks in the "Mirror"

There's a certain literal quality to the video for the new single from Natalia Kills, "Mirrors." Literally, there is a giant mirror throughout much of the song. But there's also quite a bit of darkness, sexuality, and just plain weirdness. Consider it a preview of what to expect from the debut full-length album coming in March on Cherrytree/Interscope.

Welcome to the World of T.I.

Hey, it worked for Cee Lo! T.I. has got a lyric video for his song "Welcome to the World" (off his upcoming release, No Mercy, which is out this week). T.I. may not have the angelic voice that Cee Lo does, but he did bring Kanye West and Kid Cudi along for this single. While it will be hard for No Mercy to match the greatness of Paper Trail, "Welcome to the World" sounds like T.I. is giving it his best to try.

Gordon Voidwell performed at the WIRE Store last week

Gordon Voidwell | WIRED Store | December 1, 2010

Gordon Voidwell at WIRED Store, December 1, 2010
It's at this time of year when the music industry starts throwing their holiday parties. Booze is spilled and bands play. Gordon Voidwell performed at one such party at the WIRED Store last week. Girlie Action Media hosted the party at the pop-up store, and among the gadgets and cupcakes Voidwell still stood out. He knew how to draw the crowd's attention immediately with a Blondie cover. Check out photos from the event below. And if you're interested in your own holiday greeting from Voidwell, he'll perform at Southpaw on December 18.

Album Review: Daft Punk - Tron Legacy

DAFT PUNK
TRON LEGACY

(Walt Disney Records)
www.daftpunk.com

Someone in Hollywood thought it would be a good idea if they got the band that dressed up like robots to score the soundtrack of a remake of TRON, a movie about the best technology 1982 had to offer. Robots and technology, get it? Had the French duo stayed true to their highly electronic sound, this could've been one of the most amazing soundtracks of all time.

However, while it is nearly impossible for Daft Punk to make a bad album, it seems not hard at all for them to make a disappointing one (think of the underwhelming Human After All in the wake of their masterpiece, Discovery). Tron Legacy finds the act crafting songs that sound like it might be from any sort of generic film--not even necessarily a sci-fi film--with a mostly orchestral feeling. There are times when the songs do sound futuristic, such as "The Grid" or "Derezzed." But these tracks are few in numbers, and even the best ones on this soundtrack only match up with some of the weakest material from Daft Punk's early work.

It may be a little unfair to criticize the Tron Legacy soundtrack for, well, being a movie soundtrack. But when you attach a name like Daft Punk to it, there is an expectation. It's great to see the act be able to craft this sort of departure from their pop electronic work, but it's not capturing them at their most innovative or interesting. This album feels like it could've been written and composed by any nameless or faceless composer. If this album didn't have the name of Tron or the ironically faceless masks of Daft Punk attached, would anyone even care? Would it even get a second listen? But then again, if it wasn't Daft Punk, would the standard be so high?
