The Sight Below tours the west coast

The one-man electronic Seattle musician The Sight Below has garnered his share of praise since the release of Glider in 2008. Electronic music doesn't always translate to a live setting all that well, so it's great to see the act giving it a try with some west coast tour dates in September. Sadly, this means no New York City date on the run, but check out where he is heading to on the schedule below. This tour comes right after a new release entitled Room 40 under his real name of Rafael Anton Irisarri, which came out last week.

The Sight Below tour dates:
Dates marked * w/ Pantha Du Prince
09.17 Los Angeles, CA @ The Echo*
09.18 San Francisco, CA @ The Independent*
09.20 Portland, OR @ Holocene*
09.21 Vancouver, BC @ Biltmore Cabaret*
09.23 Seattle, WA @ Decibel Festival (as Rafael Anton Irisarri)

Album Review: Margaret Cho - Cho Dependent

MARGARET CHO
CHO DEPENDENT

(Clownery Records)
www.margaretcho.com

Make no mistake about it, Margaret Cho is a very funny woman. I'm the One That I Want feels like an essential viewing material for any fan of stand-up comedy. The release of Cho's new musical comedy album, Cho Dependent, should bring tons laugh out loud humor, so why does it feel like I'm barely cracking a smile while listening to this record?

Cho seems to focus a little too much on the music and not quite enough on the comedy. In fact, as a musical album Cho Dependent is a success. She bounces a few genres around while maintaining a very consistant sound. Part of the credit may be due to the cornucopia of guest musicians on this album, including Ani DiFranco, Fiona Apple, Ben Lee, and many others. However, while this artists are all present, they're often lost in the mix--taking a backseat to the clear star of this album, "Margaret Fucking Cho" (yes, that's the way she refers to herself in one of the songs).

On the comedy side of things though, I find myself cracking a smile from time to time, but that's almost the entire extent of it. The only time I say that I actually laughed was when Cho veered off into Weird Al territory when she parodied Mickey Avalon's "My Dick" with a very Cho appropriate version: "My Puss."

It's weird that this album might have succeeded a little better if it didn't claim to be comedy. Maybe the jokes are just overshadowed by the well crafted music that accompanies it. Margaret Cho may be a very funny woman, but Cho Dependent is not her best foot forward.

Is T.I. going back to prison?

Uh-oh. It looks like rapper T.I. is in trouble with the law again. This time he's been arrested for possession of meth according to MSNBC. It wasn't too long ago we were celebrating his release from his time served for an illegal weapons charge. Though he and his wife (who was also arrested in the drug incident) have posted bail, it's certainly possible this will sent him back to the big house. Doh.

Chiddy Bang to debut an album BEFORE their debut album

Chiddy Bang have set themselves apart from other hip-hop acts with their odd indie rock sampling choices (such as Sufjan Stevens and MGMT), but it has allowed the duo to straddle genres to appeal to the mainstream while having total hipster cred. Their debut album, The Swelly Life, is sure to be in demand when they finally finish it. In the meantime, Chiddy Bang have offered to tide fans over with an 8-song "prequel" album entitled The Preview. Fans will be able to preview the new material when the pre-debut album drops on October 12. If your confused about how an act can debut an album BEFORE their debut album. Don't worry, so are we!

The Preview track list:
The Good Life (co-produced by Pharrell)
Truth
Opposite Of Adults
Here We Go (ft Q-Tip)
All Things Go
Nothing On We
Bad Boy (ft Darwin Deez)

Goldfrapp is a "Believer" in pinball

There's no shortage of strange promotional materials in the world of music. While iPod pinball may not seem all that out there in the grand scheme of things, Goldfrapp's free game isn't quite your everyday promotion either. The gameplay is awkward and choppy; it's easier to steer the ball by tilting your iPod instead of tapping on the screen to trigger the unresponsive flippers. All the while, various samples from Goldfrapp's Head First are featured when various bumpers and buttons are hit. It's not sleek, but it's free. And it's really all just a tease for the upcoming single to be released on September 7, Believer.

"Believer" Track List:
1. Believer (Radio Edit)
2. Believer (Joris Voorn Remix)
3. Believer (Joris Voorn Dub)
4. Believer (Vince Clarke Remix)
5. Believer (Vince Clarke Remix (edit))
6. Believer (Little Loud Remix)
7. Believer (Subway Remix)
8. Believer (Davide Rossi Reinterpretation)

The Acorn get restored on new video

Let's face the simple fact: it's easy to be a sucker for stop-motion animation. The Acorn's new video for "Restoration" loosely fits into that category. Though a lot of it seems more like sped up live action, there are moments when artificial butterflies flutter and beasts emerge--and those moments truly look great (though it can't compete with Woods' effort from last year). Don't forget about The Acorn's upcoming tour.

"Fuck You" again

After monstrous viral success with "Fuck You" on Youtube, Cee Lo Green is revisiting the song with an "official" video. Honestly, we sort of thought it was fine already. The new version has a Sean Kingston "Beautiful Girls" quality to it, and it's just not quite as endearing. It's still the jam of the summer though...
