Incubus lead singer to go solo

Incubus didn't seem like a likely band for mainstream success when they first started releasing music in the 90s, but by the end of the decade, they hit it huge with their hit "Drive," and the band seem to still be going strong ten years later. The success even warranted a solo career from the band's lead singer Brandon Boyd, who put out The Wild Trapeze this week. File this one under unexpected.

Album Review: We Are Scientists - Barbara

WE ARE SCIENTISTS
BARBARA

(Masterswan Recordings)
www.wearescientists.com

It's a complete mystery how a rather generic band can emerge from the homogeneous post-punk segment of the indie rock scene. We Are Scientists are really no exception to this. Sure, the band have a decent sound, an alright live show, and a new album with some songs that aren't bad. However, being "not bad" does not entail that the record is engaging, interesting, or even good.

In a lot of ways, there isn't anything wrong with Barbara. The musicianship is competent, the songwriting is decent, and there is a fair amount of energy to it. The problem is that this sound has been done, not just by We Are Scientists, but countless other nameless bands.

The thing is that We Are Scientists have distinguished themselves from the unknowns to make a name for themselves, but Barbara still doesn't give me any clues as to why. Maybe it's just that indie rock, despite having a daring reputation, actually welcomes and rewards the generic. Whatever the reason, with this being the band's first album free of a major label, it would've been nice to hear things get more daring--or at least more memorable.

Black Francis's solo tour

It can be quite hard keeping track of if the former Pixies frontman wants to be known as Frank Black or Black Francis. It's not like it matters, he's an amazing performer no matter what name he goes by, and he'll be taking the road solo under the latter nom de plume for shows across America. Technically, the tour started last night in San Luis Obispo, but the bulk of the dates come in August and September. This includes two shows in New York at Joe's Pub on September 3rd and 4th. Full schedule for Black Francis is after the jump.

Black Francis tour dates:
Jul 8 - McNear's Mystic Theatre & Music Hall - Petaluma, CA
Aug 15 - Henry Miller Library - Big Sur, CA

Aug 19 - The Mountain Winery - Saratoga, CA
