CMJ New Music Monthly (finally) officially stops publishing

This may not seem like news to the few people who still subscribe to CMJ New Music Monthly, but it looks like the magazine has finally gone away. Think about how long it's been before you've even seen a CMJ magazine (whether it be on the newsstands or in the mailbox of a subscriber). The music rag has effectively been dead since 2008 (and on life support long before that), but the company announced today that they are basically moving the publication online (maybe Blender should tell CMJ how well that worked for them). However, it's nice to see the company finally acknowledging it's dead state. Statement from the publisher is as follows:
Dear CMJ New Music Monthly Subscriber,

It shouldn't come as a surprise to you to hear that the past few years have been a very challenging period for music publications, ours included. Like most of our peers in the space, we have been forced to make some tough decisions in order to continue to deliver CMJ New Music Monthly to our readers. For this reason, we have decided that effective immediately CMJ New Music Monthly will be available as a digital download music compilation only.
We have made the decision to move away from a print publication primarily because:

1) Our subscribers have made it loudly and abundantly clear that the primary reason they subscribe to CMJ is for its curated music compilation.

2) The overwhelming majority of our subscribers have indicated that they would happily have a greater bundle of amazing new music reliably available online the first of each and every month than the untimely manner it is currently being provided.

Most importantly, CMJ New Music Monthly will continue to live on as a monthly digital download compilation while CMJ.com will simultaneously provide you a plethora of music coverage, charts, news, interviews, reviews and more.

As a current CMJ New Music Monthly subscriber, you will be able to access a private website at www.cmj.com/nmm and, by simply entering your email address, be able to download our monthly digital compilation.

We know that the last few years have been a trying time for CMJ New Music Monthly subscribers. Your ongoing support has enabled CMJ to adapt to today's changing music and media environment and with your continued support we hope to continue to bring you the very best new music for years to come.

Thanks and best regards,

Bobby Haber

Cage the Elephant break out on new video

Cage the Elephant's latest video has the band performing in a car junkyard and at a house party (or at least that's what it looks like). "In One Ear" may not have a deeper meaning behind the video, but, heck, at least it looks like a lot of fun. Check it out above.

Cloud Cult return with new EP on (4/20) Earth Day

Does anyone else think it's strangely suspicious that Earth Day takes play on April 20 (a.k.a. 4/20)? I mean, as if hippies and environmentalists weren't associated enough, the timing of those days just hammers it in. A new EP, Running With the Wolves, release from Cloud Cult on that date might really drive the point home. The EP will tide fans over until the band's next full-length album, Light Chasers, which is scheduled for an August street date.

OK Go challange fans to create their own Rube Goldberg Machine

In celebration of the band's recent video for "This Too Shall Pass," OK Go are now challenging fans to create their own Rube Goldberg Machines! The prize? Free tickets to the band's shows. Details as follows:
Welcome to our brand new ticket giveaway contest where the winners will receive a pair of tickets to any one of the shows on our upcoming Spring tour. We’ll give away tickets to every single show for which we have submissions, including festival passes to SASQUATCH, BAMBOOZLE, BONNAROO, and HANGOUT festivals! Yes, we are giving away free, full weekend festival passes to Sasquatch, Bamboozle, Bonnaroo and Hangout!
Want a shot at winning? Simply make your own Rube Goldberg Machine, inspired by our new video for This Too Shall Pass. That’s it. The rules are simple:

* Create your own Rube Goldberg Machine that somehow spells out the words “OK Go” with its’ interactions
* Capture the action on video
* Include text in the video (written on paper? added as captions? etc) stating the name of the venue and the date of our show there
* Upload your creation as a video response to our YouTube video and tag it “okgo” and “okgomonddyyyy” (ie, for our Denver show you’d tag your video “okgo” and “okgoApr142010″)

A few times a week we’ll review the submissions and pick a winner for a particular show. We will choose one winner for every show we have qualifying submissions for, in no particular order. Winners will be notified via YouTube messenger, so be sure to check your inbox!

Remember, your machine doesn’t have to be as elaborate or large as ours! Use items you find around the house, and have fun with it. And be sure to include some text in the video stating which venue and dates you want tickets for. Otherwise how would we know?!
