Album Review: Lil Wayne - Rebirth

LIL WAYNE
REBIRTH

(Cash Money Records)
www.lilwayne-online.com

I wanted to like Lil Wayne's Rebirth; I really did. For starters, we've been waiting for this album for what seems like forever now. The first single, "Prom Queen," showed that Lil Wayne was ready to take some risks with this album. He was approaching this as a full-on rock record. But there was something amazingly twisted about this, because Lil Wayne is a rap star, not a rocker. As a result, the single seemed like an outsider looking inward and interpreting a style through his own mind. This wasn't how rock music sounds; this was how Lil Wayne thought it sounded.

In theory, this record should act as the nail in rock's coffin. Wayne takes on every genre of rock imaginable from the classic rock sound on "American Star" to the nu-metal sound of "Prom Queen" to punk rock with "The Price Is Wrong," all of which still have the overly Auto-Tuned vocals we've come to expect from Weezy. It should just be a wake up call to rockers all over to not take themselves too seriously. A clear parody of a genre that has slowly been losing relevance. But how can Lil Wayne parody a genre when he seems to be taking himself so seriously?

If there's a joke here, it gets old fast--right around the third track, which is entitled "Ground Zero." It's where he really starts fusing rap and rock on the album, in a rather unsuccessful manner. This is further continued later in the album when he gets Enimen to guest on a track. You just get the feeling after a while that this isn't the genius concept album that it should've been, it was just Lil Wayne having some fun. There isn't anything wrong with just having fun, but being "fun" and being "good" are not one and the same.

Dark Void video game gets a soundtrack

I don't fully understand the appeal of Capcom's Dark Void video game. I downloaded the demo but got quickly bored. However, it's apparently pretty popular. So much so that the game's soundtrack is going to be released digitally and on CD next week via Sumthing Else Music Works. The music on the soundtrack will be 80 minutes from the score handpicked by Bear McCreary, the game music's composer. In addition, there will be a bonus track, "Theme from Dark Void (Mega Version)," an 8-bit rendering of the main theme for a NES-style version of the game, Dark Void Zero. The track was written and produced by McCreary with just a little help from Jonathan Snipes (of Captain Ahab fame).

From Capcom's blog:
Prepare for the fight of your life! All-new Dark Void ™ Downloadable Content will be available for Xbox 360 and PS3 starting next week! In the Survivor Missions, relive key events from Dark Void™ as you battle waves of increasingly difficult enemy troops. Rack up massive points with score multipliers for headshots, and hijack enemy aircrafts. Fight back against the alien armada! But never forget what matters most: Survival!

The new DLC will be an arcade-esque experience where the player battles through hoards of enemies on the ground and in the air while collecting points and upgrading weaponry, with the goal being to survive to Round 10 and increase their previous high score. Xbox users will be able to download this content beginning on February 10 th, 2010 for 400 points ($5.00) and PS3 users on February 11 th for $4.99.

Not only are we giving you downloadable content next week but we are also unveiling the Dark Void Soundtrack! This original Soundtrack features 80 minutes of score hand-picked by McCreary. It also includes a special bonus track, "Theme from Dark Void (Mega Version)," an 8-bit rendering of the main theme written and produced by McCreary for Capcom's just shipped downloadable DSiWare title, Dark Void Zero. Sumthing Else Music Works will be releasing the soundtracks for Dark Void, available (on CD and digitally) and Dark Void Zero available (digitally) on February 9th.

David Lynch directs music video for Ariana Delawari

There doesn't seem to be any embedding option on the David Lynch Foundation website, but go over here to check out Ariana Delawari's new video, which is directed by the one and only David Lynch. Much of the styles and themes that Lynch uses in his movies are visible here, and (considering how nonsensical Lynch's films can sometimes be) they actually seem to work a little better in the music video format. Also on the website, there is an interview with Delawari, where she talks about working with Lynch. You can watch that here.

The Constellations | Brooklyn Bowl | February 3, 2010

The Constellations at Brooklyn Bowl, February 3, 2010

The Constellations put on a great show. Last night the seven-piece band performed at Brooklyn Bowl with hints of an Atlanta-influence on their rocking sound. The band just feel like the sort of thing that rock and roll needs these days, and with their recent signing to Virgin Records, here's hoping that the major label backing will really propel this band into the mainstream. They certainly deserve it. More photos from last night's show are after the jump.

Album Review: Shellshag - Rumors in Disguise

SHELLSHAG
RUMORS IN DISGUISE

(Don Giovanni Records)
www.starcleaner.com

For years, Shellshag have been DIY punks rocking the fuck out and self-releasing their own records. The band's history charts a dramatic new course with their latest effort, Rumors in Disguise. For starters, the band have shifted from their Starcleaner label to indie label Don Giovanni Records for the release of this record. The album also takes the band on a new route musically. These punks have softened up, but, more importantly, they have grown more mature.

However, this doesn't mean that Shellshag have tossed away their punk influence. There's still plenty of fast songs ("Dirty Looks"), fuzzed out songs ("Cashing Rockets"), and short songs ("Rumors"). But there's also a pop sensibility ("Resilient Bastard") that often makes you sometimes forget that these songs were crafted by a sole guitarist and sole drummer with only half a set of drums.

Rumors in Disguise is the evolution of a punk band that is moving in a pop direction. But considering the fact that Shellshag never sounded like your typical punk band to begin with, their transitional metamorphosis is not a typical stepping stone either.

King of Prussia goes country-western on new EP

MP3: King of Prussia - "Waitin' for Something

Considering that the band shares a name with a town in Pennsylvania, King of Prussia doesn't exactly scream "country western," but this is an experiment of sorts for singer-songwriter Brandon Hanick, who sports the Philadelphia suburb moniker. However, Hanick takes on the genre with his new EP, The Time of Great Forgetting, which is out tomorrow on Kindercore. An MP3 of one of the tracks is available above while the full track list is after the jump.

The Time of Great Forgetting EP track list:
01. Waitin' For Something

Drums Like Machine Guns | Death by Audio | January 27, 2010

Drums Like Machine Guns at Death by Audio, January 27, 2010

Drums Like Machine Guns didn't play drums. In fact, the beginning of their set didn't even have any drum sounds. It was just a sonic noise session for about half the set. A drum machine eventually kicked in a pounding beat, which slowly morphed into something that I guess you could call machine gun-like. It may have taken a while for the band to live up to their name, but that shouldn't be an issue considering how amazing their set was. Photos from their show at Death by Audio last week are below.
