Jason Trachtenburg played at .357 Lover's residency on Tuesday night (photos)

Jason Trachtenburg | Knitting Factory | January 5, 2010

Jason Trachtenburg at Knitting Factory, January 5, 2010

Though he will be playing a show with the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players on January 21 at the Knitting Factory, Jason Trachtenburg took to the same stage solo on Tuesday night as part of .357 Lover's circus of a residency. There's always a lot of humor in his set (it's up for debate if this humor is intentional or not), and when he is solo, there's also a sort of simplistic beauty to his songs. Check out photos from the show after the jump.

Snoop Bowl VIII will kick off: February 6, 2010, 1:30pm

Snoop Dogg may be famous for rapping, smoking weed, and being the Creative Chairman of Priority Records. Apparently he also coaches young children on a football team, and this year his kids are gearing up for the biggest football game of the year on February 6, 2010 with 1:30pm (that's the day before that other sort of famous football event called "Super Bowl XLIV" or something like that).

According to Snoop's press release:
Entertainer and hip hop icon Snoop Dogg has announced that his eighth annual "Snoop Bowl" will be played in South Florida on February 6, 2010. Snoop's nearly undefeated team, the Snoop Dogg All Stars, will square off against a local youth football team from Miami coached by Miami Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter and superstar wide receiver Terrell Owens. The event promises to be a spectacular one and with an amazing plight focused on kids.

Annually, the "Snoop Bowl" has the Snoop Dogg All Stars traveling to the Super Bowl to challenge a team of all stars from the host city. Last year, Snoop's team decisively defeated the Mike Alstott led Tampa All-Stars, 22-6, in Tampa.

This year the challenge moves to Miami, and anything can happen."Snoop Bowl VIII" kicks off February 6th at 1:30pm at Traz Powell Stadium in Miami. Tickets will be available online at www.ticketalternative.com or at the gate on game day. Tickets are $10 for children 12 and under and $20 for ages 13 and up. Admission is free for children 3 and under.

Cheap Trick to "headline" SXSW

The idea of a "headliner" at SXSW is a bit of a joke (the festival just doesn't work in a way that lends itself to headliners), but that's the word the Austin music festival used today when announcing that Cheap Trick will play the event:
The one-and-only Cheap Trick will perform at the SXSW Music Festival. Since the '70s the band has been blending elements of pop, punk and even metal in a way that is catchy and instantly recognizable. With more than 5,000 performances, 20 million records sold, 29 movie soundtracks and 40 gold and platinum recording awards, Cheap Trick are a musical institution. Their most recent release, 'The Latest,' has garnered glowing reviews worldwide and continues the group's reign as a power-pop progenitor as they celebrate their 35th anniversary together.

.357 Lover (Corn Mo) kicked off a Tuesday night residency at the Knitting Factory last night (photos)

.357 Lover | Knitting Factory | January 5, 2010

.357 Lover (Corn Mo) at Knitting Factory, January 5, 2010

Every Tuesday night in January, .357 Lover will be taking the stage at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. That's the band that Corn Mo fronts (a guy you may have seen open up for Ben Folds, They Might Be Giants, or The Polyphonic Spree in recent years). Corn Mo ditched his accordion in favor of a keyboard while playing with his full band, and the man has a wide variety of friends to bring to the stage with him. It's not just musicians, but hula hoopers, magicians, and comedians all took to the stage last night (photos of them a little later). .357 Lover interspersed their songs amongst the various acts, resulting in them both kicking off and ending the night, attracting the audience early and keeping them there all evening. More photos are after the jump.

Album Review: Jason Boesel - Hustler's Son

JASON BOESEL
HUSTLER'S SON

(Team Love)
www.myspace.com/jasonboesel

After Rilo Kiley found themselves rocketed to success, the two main members went off to try their hand at solo careers. Blake Sennett formed The Elected and got signed to Sub Pop. Jenny Lewis joined with The Watson Twins to release an album under her own name. All of these solo projects had an almost country twang to them and often lacked the sheer indie pop brilliance that made Rilo Kiley great. Luckily, despite the solo work, Rilo Kiley have never broken up, and now Jason Boesel of the band is trying his own hand at songwriting with a record of his own, Hustler's Son, which is set for release by Team Love on January 12.

Much like his bandmates Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett, Boesel's solo work feels a little more like a country singer-songwriter than a brilliant indie pop star. It starts to feel a little bit like Rilo Kiley are somehow more than the sum of its parts. But just because an album is disappointing, doesn't mean it's bad.

Taken out of the context of "member of Rilo Kiley," the record is solid. It's easy to buy Boesel as a talented singer-songwriter who crafted a decent, heartfelt record. There's nothing that really jumps out or grabs the listener on this record, but it's a pleasant listen. However, let's throw back in that Rilo Kiley context for a moment. Boesel is the drummer for the band. Trying his hand on songwriting and singing is a far cry from sitting behind the kit. A drummer trying his hand at songwriting is almost a recipe for low expectations, but Boesel pulls it off. Maybe it's because despite this being his solo debut, it's not his first time writing or singing (he contributed to two tracks in this manner on Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band's Outer South last year). Or maybe he's just picked up something great from the numerous bands that he has drummed for over the years.

Hey Radio Shock! What's the best record of 2009?

GAY BEAST
SECOND WAVE
(Skin Graft Records)
by MP Lockwood of Radio Shock

Lately, I spend more and more of my time listening to death metal. This album is not death metal, but let me explain what they have in common. There's a lot of music out there these days. I mean a LOT. That means I have to prioritize my listening and the things which get my ear (especially for more than one listen!) are those which have plenty of blood, sweat, and tears put into them - or are simply so novel and unique that they have to be heard. Death metal at least requires a great deal of practice, technique, execution, and ideally innovation as well. Gay Beast has all those things in spades, while at the same time being impossible to fit into any category. You could say they are a combination of influences from the past, sure, like No Wave, prog rock, noise-rock, math rock... but these labels are so ill-defined themselves that all you're really saying about Gay Beast is that they are challenging, original, and experimental. This album takes their already-quirky sound and goes further with it. It's an album which pushes musical composition into the future. And I still stand by my claim that it's "catchy." Even with all that other music to hear out there, I've still listened to this tons of times, and get something new out of it every time. If you think the Flaming Lips or Radiohead are clever, prepare to have your mind blown open.

Runners up:
Mincemeat or Tenspeed, Manifest/Wizard (Self-Released)
Behemoth, Evangelion (Metal Blade)
Lightning Bolt, Earthly Delights (Load Records)

Neko Case, Middle Cyclone
NEKO CASE
MIDDLE CYCLONE
(Anti-)
by Andrea Shearer of Pariah Piranha

Every year Neko Case releases an album, and it is my favorite album of the year. I love Middle Cyclone, because it has all the things I love about Neko Case: sweetness, sadness, and a voice that is so powerful it is like its own animal.

DOUBLE DAGGER

Hey Woodhands! What's the best record of 2009?

DIRTY PROJECTORS
BITTE ORCA
(Domino Records)
by Dan Werb of Woodhands

I don't naturally gravitate towards rock music--it's just not really my thing--but Bitte Orca is ridiculously complex and absolutely stunning, not to mention audacious and maybe a little bit pretentious, all things that I think belong in music. These dudes are on their own trip, and I am just happy that they took the time to release this instead of just putting it in the bunker that they are obviously building in preparation of the new world order where they emerge as kings.

Runners up:
Royksopp, Junior (Astralwerks)
Phoenix, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (Astralwerks)
Brother Ali, Us (Warner Music)
