Album Review: Epstein - Jaytram/Prefuse 73/Epstein

(Asthmatic Kitty)

It's always fair to be a little skeptical of digital releases. Was this not good enough for a physical release? Is it something that is trying to be shuffled to a dark corner? Or could it be a true forward-thinking effort to move from physical to digital? Well, in the case of the latest Epstein effort, maybe it was just too weird.

Is it even fair to call this an effort from Epstein (aka Roberto Lange, aka Helado Negro)? Though he provided the source material, it was all basically ripped apart and put back together by Jaytram (drummer for the ultra-hip Yeasayer) and Prefuse 73. From the very first moments, there's a certain weird glitchiness to this record--I'm certainly reminded much more of Prefuse than anything from Yeasayer.

It's hard for me to say if this stays true to the original source material from Epstein (I'm not even sure if I can say that I'm all that familiar), but I think it's safe to say that it's almost a little disappointing that this album is only available as a download. How cool would it be to slap this on a vinyl and spin it during a DJ set? It would get your regular club-goers thumping, but it sure would get them thinking.
