Cypress Hill sign to Priority Records/EMI

It's not usually news when a major artist inevitably leaves the label they've been working with for years. What makes Cypress Hill's departure from Columbia Records/Sony notable is who snapped them up. The rap group announced today that Priority Records/EMI will release their next record, Rise Up, on April 6. This means that the first official signing under Snoop Dogg's stint as Creative Chairman of Priority is an act that's been around for twenty or so years.

It's doesn't exactly scream extremely revolutionary or daring, and shuffling acts from one major label to another without fostering new talent isn't going to save the music industry. But it might be about more than that. It might be about Snoop Dogg bringing out the big guns first and, at the same time, showing a certain respect for the past.
