Animal Kingdom debuts their new video

Animal Kingdom have this sort of dreamy quality, trying to fill a void left by Radiohead a long time ago. With the debut video of their song, "Tin Man," that song is translated into appropriate visuals. A light snow falls over a two-dimensional city, it's simple concept, but it works.

Athlete return with new EP in November

MP3: Athlete - "Superhuman Touch"

Athlete are returning with a new EP on November 3rd. It's called The Getaway EP, but it's really just a taste in preparation for their next full length, Black Swan, which will be out early next year on Original Sound Recordings stateside. Unless I'm mistaken, this will be the band's first record not released on Astralwerks here in the US.

Jessica 6 released new EP yesterday, played The Box to celebrate (photos)

Jessica 6 | The Box | October 6, 2009

Jessica 6 at The Box

Watching Jessica 6 was a little bit like watching a strip shop, except with better music. Last night the band played at The Box to celebrate the release of their new EP, Fun Girls, which was also released yesterday. The small room quickly filled up shortly before the band took to the stage. The sexuality of the band was a focus of the night, with the lead singer clad in little more than a short skirt, bra, and tall boots. If that doesn't convince you to check out the photos after the jump, I don't know what will.

Animal Collective to reissue Campfire Songs

Apparently, Animal Collective's Campfire Songs (originally released on Catsup Plate) recently went out of print. Well, the band didn't want the CD to be unavailable for long, and Paw Tracks will reissue the five-track disc on January 26, 2010. Is it possible that a record from 2003 will be one of the most anticipated ones of the new year?

The Almost go to the mall with Hot Topic

It's probably been close to a decade since I've step foot in a Hot Topic store. I'm going to assume they still litter malls with a pseudo goth/emo/skater style. Now the band The Almost are teaming up with the store to release an exclusive EP, which is available at Hot Topic stores, The Almost's website, and on their tour. Considering the partnering with Hot Topic, I'm going to leave the guessing what the band sounds like up to you. This EP should tide fans over until the full-length album from The Almost, Monter Monster, is released; it looks like anyone who buys the EP will actually get a pretty good taste of the album:
The package will include the full length packaging for Monster Monster, two CDs, one of music (three album cuts and two b-sides) and a second blank disc to download the full album with a promotional code the day of release (11/3) from Hot Topic website ShockHound.com.

Yo Gabba Gabba! scheduled to tour

The fact that Yo Gabba Gabba! is touring and releasing a new CD is sort of funny. However, with aging hipsters having kids these days, it's not surprising that a show with a string of indie rock guests (I watched one the other date with Leslie and the Lys) makes sense...in a way. The tour is short (with only dates in Los Anegeles, New York, and Chicago), but, you know, it's sure to stimulate the mind of pr-schoolers everywhere.

Yo Gabba Gabba! tour dates:
November 14th - Los Angeles, CA - Shrine Expo - 11AM and 3PM
November 21st - New York, NY - Beacon Theatre - 11AM and 2PM

Album Review: Daniel Johnston - Is and Always Was

DANIEL JOHNSTON
IS AND ALWAYS WAS

(Eternal Yip Eye Music)
www.hihowareyou.com

It's hard to ignore the fact that Daniel Johnston suffers from bipolar disorder. On the first track of Is and Always Was he confesses that he's "...just a psycho..." The music surrounding these words pure folk rock genius, and is actually surprisingly well-produced (a contrast to Johnston's very early work recorded on a $60 boombox, I'm sure).

However, it's Johnston's actual vocal delivery that keep this record real. They are beautifully unique with an unimitable lisp or slur. It gives the recording an instantly lovable innocent feel, even when Johnston's lyrics are sad.

If we split Is and Always Was into two sides (you know, like a tape of vinyl release), the A-side would be the better of the two, filled with most of the jangly pop songs. The flip side would have the droning sad stuff--with more distortion and more reverb. Would it be fair to say that this is a reflection of Johnston's bipolar disorder? Naw, let's just say it's a great record.

Their Thursday appearance in Los Angeles has also been canceled. The Backstreet Boys appearance on the CBS Early Show tomorrow is also off. O'Death's Blood Warrior

Greg Jamie (frontman of O'Death) has announced a new band called Blood Warrior, which teams Jamie with Joey Weiss (Super Monster), Kristin Kellas, and Rubin Berger (Musee Mecanique, Laura Gibson, Mirah). Part of me actually loves the deceivingly metal-sounding band names this guy gives his acts. Apparently, the debut album from Blood Warrior has recently been finished (no word on an official release date as of yet other than "winter"), but that doesn't mean that the band is just going to sit around and patiently wait. No, they've got a 7" out on November 3rd via Ernest Jenning (the label that will also put out the full length), and the band will be embarking on a bunch of tour dates, many of which are right here in New York City. Check out the full list of shows after the jump.

On the band's Myspace page, there is also a much more mysterious gig the day before scheduled at an address of "213 N 8th Street" in Brooklyn. Astronautalis at Gramercy Theater

I hadn't seen any information about an opener for Wax Tailor at the Gramercy the other night, so it took me a while to figure out who Astronautalis was. He was a good rapper, it was a pretty good performance, but I've seen the whole 'guy-with-a-laptop' thing done better. Still, with just a bit more stage theatrics, Astronautalis would go from being good to great...easily. Check out photos from his performance after the jump.

Wax Tailor kicked off his tour last night at Gramercy Theater (photos)

Tailor | Gramercy Theater | October 2, 2009

Wax Tailor at Gramery Theater

The thing about a live set from Wax Tailor is that it isn't about him. The electronic musician stays in the back, allowing others to take the front and center position on stage. Last night at the Gramercy Theater, he was joined by Mattic, an MC from Charlotte, NC band The Others; Charlotte Savary, who was featured on the very first Wax Tailor EP Lost The Way; a cellist; and a flautist. A screen off to the side accompanied the performance with fantastic visuals. It's just the first night of his North American tour. Tim Exile finished up his US tour at Santos Party House last night

Tim Exile | Santos Party House | October 1, 2009

Tim Exile at Santos Party House

Tim Exile had been playing shows in America for about a week, and last night he finished up here in New York City for a late night show at Santos Party House. It was probably around 1:30AM when he finally took to the stage, but it was well worth the wait. He crafted electronic masterpieces based around samples of the crowd cheering and his own voice. Exile proved he was a true showman when he grabbed a wireless joystick and got down with the crowd to perform a song--seriously, a song completely performed on a wireless joystick. Weird but cool, right? Photos from last night are below.

Backstreet Boys are totally in support of breast cancer awareness

Supporting breast cancer awareness is pretty much a no-brainer. Who would be against such a thing? It shouldn't come as a surprise that a band with a release in Breast Cancer Awareness Month would do a promotion in support of the cause. The Backstreet Boys (with their new album This Is Us coming out on October 6th) will be at two special events, one in New York on Monday and the other in Los Angeles on Thursday, to raise money. Both take place at Hard Rock Cafes (Times Square and 1000 Universal Studios Blvd, respectively). For only $120 at www.backstreetboys.com, you can get one of 100 VIP passes for the New York event starting at 10AM PST (we think that translates to 1PM over here on the east coast).
All fans have to do is purchase one of the following three donation packages to take part in these special events:

$17 Basic Donation Package - Includes an autographed This Is Us CD.

$30 Deluxe Donation Package - Includes an autographed This Is Us CD, a PINKTOBER Pin and you will be amongst the first in line to meet the Backstreet Boys.

$40 Premium Donation Package - Includes an autographed This Is Us CD, a PINKTOBER t-shirt and you will be amongst the first in line to meet the Backstreet Boys.

$120 VIP Reception Package (for New York City only) - Includes an intimate reception with the band that starts at 7:30pm, an autographed copy of This Is Us (that you don't have to wait in line for) and food and drink.

(Only 100 VIP passes will be sold and they will go on-sale tomorrow, Friday October 2nd at 10am PST on the group's official fan club www.backstreetboys.com)

Fans will be allowed to line up at the 43rd street entrance to NYC's Hard Rock starting at 2pm (EST) on Monday, October 5th. In Los Angeles, fans will be allowed to start lining up at 4pm (PST) on Thursday, October 8th.

Tiesto's remix contest + tour dates

The contest launches concurrently with the exclusive release of the track on Beatport on September 29, giving remixers one week to download the stems of the “Knock You Out” track, which may be purchased individually or bundled at $4.99 USD. For two weeks starting October 6, contestants may upload their remixes, which may be in any chosen style or genre, to www.beatportal.com/remix, where fans and other contestants may listen to all the entries.
I think it's shitty to charge producers and artists $5 for the ability to remix someone's song, but I guess it's at least allowing someone to be creative to their heart's content with material that they have paid for. Tiesto tour dates are after the jump.

Tiesto tour dates:
10/1 - Boston, MA - Tsongas Arena

The Bravery are totally NSFW

If the title of the song ("Hatefuck") isn't enough to convince you, then check out the video above. The basic plot is people having sex in weird masks...at least as far as I can tell. And, yes, The Bravery are on tour with a date stopping of in New York City at Terminal 5 on October 8.

Mercury Records group Parachute's second single, "Under Control," was just put out to radio stations this week. Maybe I don't follow pop/rock radio enough, but the band is still unfamiliar to me. However, I'm sure that's about to change when the band open up Kelly Clarkson on a tour that will kick off here in New York City on October 6th at Hammerstein Ballroom. Is this the "We Are the World" of climate change?

It's not all too often that we get a press release about Kofi Annan in our inboxes. However, www.theforclimateustic.org has that whole "We Are the World" feel, except for climate change. You can download the track "Beds Are Burning" from that website, and I'm sure there's information about the environment and politics over there as well. Personally, we still like 30 Rock's "Kidney Now!" song just a little more.
