Are Eminem videos to blame for the popularity of Parody Movies?

When viewing the latest Eminem video, I can't help but be reminded of films like Scary Movie, Date Movie, Epic Movie, and so on. Perhaps it's because Eminem is actually using parodies of movie imagery in this video instead of hobbling together parodies of celebrities and whatnot. He's been making derivatives of this exact same video since 1999's "My Name Is," where he parodied Bill Clinton, Marilyn Manson, and a few others.

Now, parody movies have existed long before Eminem. Airplane! and Spaceballs were both around long before Eminem became a household name, but this is a far cry from the [Insert genre] / [Add the word "Movie"] type spoof film that has plagued us for the past decade. Scary Movie is the first in this formulaic nightmare, and was coincidentally released in 2000, a year after Em's debut album.

It could all be coincidence. In fact, there is probably some cultural zeitgeist guiding it. However, considering the spoof genre still rakes it in at the box office; Eminem is sure to do the same with his music.

Album Review: Stephen Lynch - 3 Balloons

Stephen Lynch - 3 Balloons (What Are Records?)

If I could shut the lyrics off on Stephen Lynch's 3 Balloons the album would be listenable. He'd probably sound like a male version of Jewel (you know, before she got all slutty?)--in fact, the song "Dear Diary" (which appears in four parts on the album) reminds me of "Who Will Save Your Soul?" so much that it's scary. However, Lynch's lyrics are the sort of profane comedy stylings that would improve any sappy acoustic ballad tenfold.

There's something reminiscent of Tenacious D with Lynch's work that's likely due to the juxtaposition of acoustic guitar with comedic lyrics. It's almost a cliche pairing at this point, but artist's can pull it off time and time again and still make it work. There are probably plenty of folks who are sick of this cliche--and such people should probably steer clear of this record--but I've got to admit that I still get some chuckles out of it. Considering the album hit the Billboard Comedy charts at #2 (Billboard has Comedy charts??), I'm not alone.

RCRD LBL releases two I Love You Airlines songs

I'm not sure why I Love You changed their name to I Love You Airlines a few years back--maybe the former was already taken, and it avoided a lawsuit--but it's been nice to see the band grow over the past few years. They've really grown their style into something quite interesting, which you can now check out at RCRD LBL.

The Answering Machine perform at Coco66 tonight, played Mercury Lounge last night (Photos)

I hope you didn't miss The Answering Machine's show last night at the Mercury Lounge, but fret not if you did as the band will be playing one more time in the city at Coco66 (66 Greenpoint Ave) in Brooklyn tonight (Tuesday, April 7).

It's hard to describe the band's set as anything except spunky! The lead singer built up quite a set by the end of the set. The Answering Machine certainly have a sound that makes their British home shine through there music, but isn't it about time for another British invasion?

Elbow doing something in France

I feel like Elbow are one of those bands that everyone in the music industry gets all excited about, but they don't sell records because the general public really just doesn't care. I just got a press release (all in French, nonetheless) about the band. I don't really know what it says because I don't speak French--heck, maybe this is some secret, private show! I wouldn't know. It's funnier to post it and figure it out later.

Who is in Yo! Majesty these days?

It's become quite a chore to keep track of the various members of Yo! Majesty recently. It started out as a three piece, shrunk to a two piece, and then it seemed Shunda K was taking on the mantle by herself. Now, for the UK Yo! Majesty tour, the other two members, Jwl B and Shon B, are going to be touring without Shunda K. Confused yet? I know I am!

HEALTH release new single, stream it for free

As a huge fan of Los Angeles noister's HEALTH, I was pretty excited to hear that they posted their new single online. As time passes, I find it difficult to refer to HEALTH as a "noise band." Yeah, they still have some noisy elements, but "Die Slow" is just so catchy that's it could be a pop song. Well, if pop songs didn't have their head stuck up their asses these days. You can pre-order the 7" here.

Antony and the Johnsons new single out today

Well, if you haven't yet, now is a good time to check it out as Antony is releasing the song as a CD single and vinyl 7" today. However, I wouldn't be doing any justice to you if I didn't also mention that the video above is directed by the Wachowski Brothers.

How could I have forgetten about the Academy of Country Music Awards?

Okay, so there's a lot of reasons why I would forget about the Academy of Country Music Awards, but I just tuned in. I think that's Reba McEntire hosting, but that's just how little I know about country music.

10:45 Not surprisingly, Taylor Swift wins for Album of the Year. Considering the shitload of records she sold, this makes sense.

10:48 Rascal Flats is now performing live. I like how I've heard of most of these artists, but this is the first time I've actually heard what they sound like.

10:56 Now I know why people hate Matthew McConaughey.

11:59 Apparently the big award is "Entertainer of the Year" and it's decided by voters on the internet. Carrie Underwood won. It makes me wonder if Kenny Chesney would've lost American Idol too.

11:00 The whole thing ends on time. That seems rare for an awards ceremony.

Future Islands also played NYU, touring with Dan Deacon

Along with Dan Deacon last night fellow Baltimore art-rockers, Future Islands, played at NYU Kimmel Center last night. I've already mentioned how much I love Future Islands, but last night's show shined particularly bright. The three-piece band likely benefited from the larger, more professional sound of a venue like NYU, as opposed to the DIY spaces they usually play. If you missed the tour dates, scroll below to that Dan Deacon story or just click this link.

Album Review: Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz (Interscope)

Don't expect me to post an MP3 from the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album, but I got a copy of the disc this week. (No, I didn't illegally download it OR buy it; you figure it out!) The record was released a few weeks ago digitally, but didn't come out on CD until this week. So if you're like me and prefer to have things cluttering your house instead of your hard drive, this was your first chance to own a legit version this record.

I read in Spin that Karen O would stop Nick Zinner from playing guitar for most of this record, forcing him to perform using other instruments, usually synthesizers, keyboards, and such. Despite Zinner's phenomenal abilities on the guitar, it's really not missed on It's Blitz! The synthesizers sound so fresh and interesting that when guitar sound do pop in, they sort of sound weak in comparison. I often wished the drums had fallen to a similar synth treatment, but they do make for a stark acoustic contrast from the electronic elements.

Basically, it's the Yeah Yeah Yeahs reinventing themselves again; though if you look at the albums in order, there is a bit of a progression as well. If it wasn't for Karen O's distinctive voice, the band just might've been completely unrecognizable. She's perfectly capable of changing it up a little bit (remember that song she did for a commercial a few years back that spawned questions of a solo career?), I just wish she'd do that a little more often.

Stabbing EASTward plays tonight at Union Pool

Tunde Adibimpe (of TV on the Radio fame) plays with his new project, Stabbing Eastward, tonight at Union Pool in Brooklyn. I can't seem to find a website or Myspace page for this band.

The name, of course, sounds remarkably similar to the 90's band Stabbing Westward. Was this intentional or just a strange coincidence? Anyone know?

Regardless, Stabbing Eastward plays with Themselves and Zizek at Union Pool, 484 Union Ave, Brooklyn, NY. The show starts at 8PM and it costs a rather hefty $15.

Dan Deacon played NYU, kicks off tour

Dan Deacon kicked off his full ensemble tour last night at NYU. Future Islands, Teeth Mountain, and Miracles of Modern Science opened. Dan utilized members of Future Islands and Teeth Mountain in his eleven-person band (twelve if you include Dan himself and thirteen if you include his video artist). I also spied his Carpark labelmate, Adventure, on stage with him.

The weird thing about Dan's performance was that it sounded both more epic AND more punk rock than his solo sets as well as his premiere ensemble performance last year (which had a different lineup). I'm wondering if Dan's soundman, the infamous Kyle H. Mabson, may have been a factor in the equation.

The Slants apparently have never heard of white guilt

I found this story sort of interesting:
The Oregon Commission on Asian Affairs, a committee put together by Oregon governor Ted Kulongoski, recently pulled funding from the non-profit organization Asian American Youth Leadership Conference (AAYLC) for involvement with founder and bassist of The Slants, Simon Young. The AAYLC committee had originally chosen Young to be the keynote speaker for this year's leadership conference, with this year's theme "Aspire to Inspire".

The Slants were also scheduled to play the youth leadership conference...Young also wrote in a recent blog, "What I find discouraging is that there is an organization (the OCAA) that exists to protect the rights of Asians, appointed by the Governor and state legislators, which is now interfering with the rights of an Asian group to make their own decisions. It¹s a sad day to live in where my rights are being trampled on by people who are offended on my behalf yet who don¹t understand my culture to begin with."

Basically, an Asian act by the name of The Slants was slated to play a conference for an Asian group. I guess they received some government money, which was pulled because they found out a band by the name of The Slants was playing.

Is this a case of white guilt by the governor? It sort of sounds like it.

Kaia Wong (from Mixel Pixel) and Thai massage

Most musicians have day jobs. Some work in coffee houses, some freelance for newspapers, and some collect unemployment. However, a few strive to start up their own thing, so I got to give mad props to Kaia Wong from Mixel Pixel for first starting her own line of lip balms several years back, but is now going into the Thai massage biz.
Receiving Thai massage is a wonderful experience. During a 60, 90, or 120 minutes session I realign all muscle groups in your body through soft and deep touch in a flowing sequence. It's relaxing and invigorating. Some people say it's like yoga without having to do yoga.
If you are interested, you can hit her up at: kaiawong@yahoo.com

Mixel Pixel will also be on tour soon. Maybe she'll arrange one on the road?

Mixel Pixel tour dates:
