Album Review: They Might Be Giants - Here Comes Science

THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS
HERE COMES SCIENCE

They Might Be Giants are really two completely different bands these days. The first is the indie rock band formed in the 80s responsible for songs like "Don't Let's Start," "Ana Ng," and "Birdhouse in Your Soul." The other is a children's band, whose origins may be traced to an appearance on Tiny Toons or the educational Why Does the Sun Shine? single. From these primordial roots, the Brooklyn band started officially making albums for children with 2002's No! More focused efforts soon followed with Here Comes the ABCs and Here Comes the 123s. They Might Be Giants have now returned with another themed kids album, Here Comes Science.

The weird thing is that the band's indie rock albums have become a little stale. Both The Else and The Shine failed to live up to the greatness of prior efforts from the band, but the kids albums maintain the band's freshness. Maybe making music for first graders has helped the Giants connect to their youthful, fun nature. The new CD/DVD (yes, there's a DVD containing animations for the various songs on the CD) even contains one of their old songs, a rocking version of "Why Does the Sun Shine?"

If you ignore the fact that They Might Be Giants are talking about Paleontologists, states of matter, and the solar system, Here Comes Science is the band's best album in a decade. On a final note, I can't help but wonder if their pro-evolution stance will see any protests from the religious right.
