TREVOR GIULIANI
SUBCONTRARIO (IN STEREO)

I think the speakers on my laptop are dying. There's a certain static that seems to come across them from time to time when things get cranked too loud. I listen to music with a fair amount of distortion, so I never hear it. However, when I cranked up Trevor Giuliani's latest, Subcontrario (In Stereo), that slight static over his otherwise crisp sound became quite apparent.
I'm sure this would bug the hell out of an audiophile, but there was something soothing to it. It gave Giuliani's record the feeling of being sputtered out on a worn out record player. The songs all have a certain timeless quality about them, and each one would be just as beautiful if it was just Giuliani strumming and singing into an old fashion wax cylinder. Sure, he uses violins, drums, and other instruments to fill out and complicate the record's sound, but they simply aren't needed. The singer-songwriter's record is beautiful to its core.
Subcontrario is out today via Dovecote Records, but apparently on only as a CD or digital download. Until a vinyl release is announced, you'll just have to figure out how to wear down a digital version.
